Situational Awareness and Dashboard Design in Semi-Autonomous Vehicles
Topic Report
PSY-130, Advanced Engineering Psychology
Professor David Aurelio
Spring, 2022
This individual assignment marked my first deep dive into scientific research for a human factors course and served as a foundation for my future independent studies on autonomous vehicles. In this twenty-page report, I analyzed how companies designing semi-autonomous vehicles approach dashboard and user interface design. The insights gained from this project directly influenced my later research and publication “A Critical Juncture: Promoting Responsible Innovation in the Self-Driving Automobile Sector while Improving Human Factors,” which you can find in the Resume section of this website.
Introduction
"As the automotive industry continues to expand its development and deployment of autonomous vehicles, the issues surrounding driver distractibility have begun to take a front seat in concerns about the use of this technology. Initially intended to provide a safer and more reliable mode of transportation, the current hybridization of machine and human engagement in the act of driving - the semi-autonomous car - has resulted in a significant number of unintended consequences in terms of human attention span - or lack thereof..."
